The so-called western cinema, also popularized under the terms "cowboy movies" or "western movies", composes a classic genre of American cinema. The English term western means "western" and refers to the border of the North American West during the colonization. This region was also called far west - and it is from here that comes the term used in Brazil and Portugal, western. Westerns can be any art forms that represent, in a romance, events of this time and region. In addition to the cinema, we can also mention sculpture, literature, painting and television programs. Although Westerns have been one of the most popular cinematic genres in film history and still have many fans, such films are virtually unheard of in this time, especially after the commercial disaster in Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate, in the early 1980s.

O chamado cinema western, também popularizado sob os termos "filmes de cowboys" ou "filmes de faroeste", compõe um género clássico do cinema norte-americano. O termo inglês western significa "ocidental" e refere-se à fronteira do Oeste norte-americano durante a colonização. Esta região era também chamada de far west - e é daqui que provém o termo usado no Brasil e Portugal, faroeste. Os westerns podem ser quaisquer formas de arte que representem, de forma romanceada, acontecimentos desta época e região. Além do cinema, podemos referir ainda a escultura, literatura, pintura e programas de televisão. Ainda que os westerns tenham sido um dos géneros cinematográficos mais populares da história do cinema e ainda tenha muitos fãs, a produção de filmes deste género é praticamente residual nos tempos que correm, principalmente depois do desastre comercial do filme Heaven's Gate, de Michael Cimino, no início da década de 1980.
