Etimologia propusă de Körting 1173, din lat. *balbaticus, este „fantastică” (Densusianu, Rom., XXXIII, 275). Nu este mai puțin nici cea a lui Pascu, Suf., 70 (calabr.babbu „prost”). Bogrea, Dacor., II, 652, nu pare să fi venit cu o soluție mai bună, cînd se referă la lat.apoplecticus. În sfîrșit, Densusianu, GS, IV, 152, pleacă de la un sl. *vablec,der. de la o rădăcină vab- „a înșela”, și atestat numai în forma vabec. În realitate este o formă reduplicată a rădăcinii expresive ble-,cf.bleau.
