ETYMOLOGY OF THE WORD BOLDÉI
boldéi (boldéi), s. m. – Cîine de talie mică, de vînătoare. Probabil
engl. bulldog, alterat în pronunțarea
pop. Este cuvînt intrat în limbă în
sec. XIX, ca termen de vînătoare, și se aplică numai cîinilor de rasă străină. DAR și Scriban îl derivă de la
bold; nu reușim însă să ne explicăm legătura semantică între cele două cuvinte. Totuși, această apropiere spontană poate explica schimbarea pronunțării. –
Der. bold(e)ică, s. f. (cățea de vînătoare). Dacă etimonul pe care îl propunem este corect,
boldei, este dublet al lui
buldog, s. m. (mops, cîine de pradă), din
engl., prin intermediul
fr. bouledogue.
