clópot (clópote), s. n.1. Obiect metalic în formă de pară prevăzut cu o limbă mobilă care produce sunete caracteristice. – 2. Bătaie de clopot, dangăt. – 3. Clopoței, talangă. – 4. În expresia a trage clopotele: a bate clopotul; a bate toba, a trîmbița; Arg., a curta o femeie, a-i face complimente. – 5. Varietate de campanule, Campanula carpatica, Campanula rapunculoides. – Mr. cloput. Sl. klopotŭ „zgomot”, de la klepati „a bate, a trage”, cf. clipi (Miklosich, Slaw Elem., 25; Miklosich, Lexicon, 288; Cihac, II, 64; Conev 57). Sensul de „clopot” nu este cert pentru sl., dar cf. bg. klopot „clopot”, sb. klepet „sunet de talangă”, sb. klepetuša „talangă”. Der. clopoțel, s. m. (talangă; clopot mic; diverse plante din familia campanulaceelor, Campanula glomerata, Campanula medium, Campanula rapunculus, Campanula patula, Campanula alpina, etc.); clopotar, s. m. (persoană care trage clopotele la biserică; persoană care sună din clopoțel; berbec blînd; indiscret); clopotărie, s. f. (atelierul clopotarului); clopoți (var. clopoti), vb. (a trage clopotul; a bate clopotul; a divulga, a trîmbița); clopotniță, s. f. (turn de biserică în care sînt instalate clopotele). Din rom. pare a proveni sb. klopotar „miel blînd”.
