Ametal, heat and electric current never transmitted. At room temperature there are solid, liquid and gaseous nonmetals. Elements such as Oxygen, Nitrogen, Helium, Chlorine are in the form of gaseous at room temperature when they are pure. Bromine is a liquid nonmetal. Carbon, phosphorus, sulfur and iodine are solid at room temperature. Nothing can be shaped. Because the hard ones are fragile, they can not be beaten. Matters do not reflect light. Örneğin Oksijen, Azot, Helyum, Klor gibi elementler saf halde iken oda sıcaklığında gaz halinde bulunur. Brom sıvı bir ametaldir. Karbon, Fosfor, Kükürt, İyot ise oda sıcaklığında katı halde bulunur. Ametallere şekil verilemez. Çünkü katı olanlar kırılgandır, dövülerek işlenemezler. Mattırlar,ışığı yansıtmazlar.Grafit/Fulleren/hariç elektriği ve ısıyı iletmezler. Erime, kaynama noktaları düşüktür. Kendi aralarında kovalent bileşikleri, metallerle de iyonik bileşikleri oluştururlar. Genellikle moleküler halde bulunur. Oksijenli bileşiklerinin sulu çözeltileri asit karakterlidir.Son enerji düzeyinde 5,6 ve 7 elektron bulunur. Metaller çözeltilerde katyonları oluştururken, ametaller anyon oluşturma eğilimindedir. Metallerin aksine iyi iletken değillerdir ve elektronegatiflikleri çok yüksektir. Metaller ve ametaller arasında özellikler gösteren bazı yarı iletken elementler, "metaloidler" olarak da adlandırılır. Halojenler ve soygazlar da ametal doğadadır.
