By heating the ammonium carbonate to 150-200 ° C, urea is obtained, which is a technical method. In the reaction known as Wöhler synthesis; the mixture of KCN and PbO2 is first heated to obtain KCNO. Urea is also obtained by agglomeration of ammonium cyanate prepared after treatment of KCNO with ammonium sulphate. The urea gives colorless crystals in the form of needle-like rhombic prisms at 132 ° C. It is well soluble in water and alcohol. It is insoluble in chloroform, ether or ethyl acetate. Su ve alkolde iyi çözünür. Kloroform, eter veya etil asetatta çözünmez. 132 °C'nin üstünde amonyak, siyanür asidi vb. gibi ürünler vererek bozunur. Nitrik asit, sodyum hipoklorit veya sodyum hipobromit gibi bileşiklerin etkisiyle azot, su ve karbondiokside ayrışır. Seyreltik asit veya alkalilerle ısıtıldığında amonyak ve karbondioksite bozunur. En çok gübre ve hayvan yemi olarak kullanılan üreden ilaç ve plastik yapımında da faydalanılır. Üre asit ve tuzlarla bir takım katılma bileşikleri, bazı asitlerle de kondensasyon ürünleri veya üreidleri verir. Naftalinin türevleriyle verdiği bileşikleri terapide kullanılır. Boya üretiminde de kullanılan üre aynı zamanda bitkiler için bir besin kaynağıdır.
