Neutron is an electrically neutral particle with about the same mass as protons. The neutrons belong to the baryons, consisting of two lower quarks and one quark. The vast majority of nuclei are composed of neutrons and protons (except for the isotope of a hydrogen atom, which consists of a proton). In the nucleus, free neutron nature is unstable, the average life expectancy of about 15 minutes. Neutron decay releases an electron and an anti-neutrinos and becomes a proton (beta decay). The same decay process also exists in some nuclei. The neutrons and protons in the nucleus can be converted to each other by absorbing and releasing the π mesons. The neutron was discovered by the British physicist James Chadwick of the Cambridge University Cavendish Laboratory in 1932. In the past, neutrons had been listed as one of the basic particles.
