La herramienta oral característica del tejido blando se llama radula, raspa o lengua de fricción. En su entrenamiento básico se utiliza para moler, moler y recoger los alimentos en la garganta. Las especies de carnívoros también pueden usar la radula para empacar y sostener las bestias. La radula está presente en todo tipo de mejillones, a excepción de los mejillones que viven como un filtro, así como algunos gusanos y caracoles que se alimentan succión. Por esta razón, representa una apomorfia sustancial de este grupo, al mismo tiempo que las múltiples modificaciones de la radula son consideradas como la principal razón para el desarrollo de diferentes fuentes de alimento y por lo tanto para la distribución generalizada y el elevado número de especies de moluscos, especialmente los caracoles.
