El síndrome de Asperger, también conocido como trastorno de Asperger o simplemente Asperger, es un trastorno del espectro autista que se caracteriza por importantes dificultades en la interacción social y la comunicación no verbal, junto con patrones de comportamiento e intereses restringidos y repetitivos. Se diferencia de otros trastornos del espectro autista por su relativa preservación del desarrollo lingüístico y cognitivo. Aunque no es necesario para el diagnóstico, la torpeza física y el uso atípico del lenguaje se informan con frecuencia. El diagnóstico de Asperger fue eliminado en la quinta edición del Manual Diagnóstico y Estadístico de Trastornos Mentales y sustituido por un diagnóstico de trastorno del espectro autista en una escala de gravedad. El síndrome se nombra después del pediatra austríaco Hans Asperger que, en 1944, estudió y describió a niños en su práctica que carecieron de habilidades no verbales de la comunicación, no identificaron las emociones de sus pares, y eran físicamente torpes. La concepción moderna del síndrome de Asperger nació en 1981 y pasó por un período de popularización, convirtiéndose en un diagnóstico a principios de los años noventa.

Asperger syndrome, also known as Asperger disorder or simply Asperger's, is an autism spectrum disorder that is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, alongside restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. It differs from other autism spectrum disorders by its relative preservation of linguistic and cognitive development. Although not required for diagnosis, physical clumsiness and atypical use of language are frequently reported. The diagnosis of Asperger's was eliminated in the 2013 fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and replaced by a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder on a severity scale. The syndrome is named after the Austrian pediatrician Hans Asperger who, in 1944, studied and described children in his practice who lacked nonverbal communication skills, failed to identify their peers' emotions, and were physically clumsy. The modern conception of Asperger syndrome came into existence in 1981 and went through a period of popularization, becoming standardized as a diagnosis in the early 1990s.
