En astronomía, el índice de color es una expresión numérica simple que determina el color de un objeto, que en el caso de una estrella da su temperatura. Para medir el índice, se observa la magnitud de un objeto sucesivamente a través de dos filtros diferentes, como U y B, o B y V, donde U es sensible a los rayos ultravioleta, B es sensible a la luz azul y V es sensible a la luz visible ligero. El conjunto de bandas o filtros se denomina sistema fotométrico. La diferencia en las magnitudes encontradas con estos filtros se denomina índice de color U-B o B-V, respectivamente. Cuanto más pequeño es el índice de color, más azul es el objeto. A la inversa, cuanto mayor es el índice de color, más rojo es el objeto. Esto es una consecuencia de la escala logarítmica de la magnitud, en la cual los objetos más brillantes tienen magnitudes más pequeñas que los más oscuros. Para la comparación, el Sol amarillento tiene un índice B-V de 0,656 ± 0,005, mientras que el Rigel azulado tiene un B-V de -0,03. En principio, la temperatura de una estrella se puede calcular directamente a partir del índice B-V, y existen en la literatura varias fórmulas para realizar esta conexión.

In astronomy, the color index is a simple numerical expression that determines the color of an object, which in the case of a star gives its temperature. To measure the index, one observes the magnitude of an object successively through two different filters, such as U and B, or B and V, where U is sensitive to ultraviolet rays, B is sensitive to blue light, and V is sensitive to visible light. The set of passbands or filters is called a photometric system. The difference in magnitudes found with these filters is called the U-B or B–V color index, respectively. The smaller the color index, the more blue the object is. Conversely, the larger the color index, the more red the object is. This is a consequence of the logarithmic magnitude scale, in which brighter objects have smaller magnitudes than dimmer ones. For comparison, the yellowish Sun has a B–V index of 0.656 ± 0.005, while the bluish Rigel has a B–V of –0.03. In principle, the temperature of a star can be calculated directly from the B-V index, and there are in the literature several formulae to make this connection.
