En el siglo III a. C., la geometría fue puesta en una forma axiomática por Euclides, cuyo tratamiento -la geometría euclidiana- estableció un estándar durante muchos siglos a seguir. Arquímedes desarrolló técnicas ingeniosas para calcular áreas y volúmenes, de muchas maneras anticipando el cálculo integral moderno. El campo de la astronomía, especialmente en lo que respecta a la cartografía de las posiciones de las estrellas y los planetas sobre la esfera celeste y describiendo la relación entre los movimientos de los cuerpos celestes, sirvió como fuente importante de problemas geométricos durante los próximos milenios. En el mundo clásico, tanto la geometría como la astronomía se consideraban parte del Quadrivium, un subconjunto de las siete artes liberales consideradas esenciales para un ciudadano libre a dominar.
