Medio interestelar
En astronomía, el medio interestelar es la materia que existe en el espacio entre los sistemas estelares de una galaxia. Esta materia incluye el gas en forma iónica, atómica, y molecular, polvo, y rayos cósmicos. Llena el espacio interestelar y se mezcla suavemente en el espacio intergaláctico circundante. La energía que ocupa el mismo volumen, en forma de radiación electromagnética, es el campo de radiación interestelar. El medio interestelar se compone de múltiples fases, que se distinguen por si la materia es iónica, atómica o molecular, y la temperatura y densidad de la materia. Las presiones térmicas de estas fases están en equilibrio áspero entre sí. Los campos magnéticos y los movimientos turbulentos también proporcionan presión en el ISM, y son típicamente más importantes dinámicamente que la presión térmica. En todas las fases, el medio interestelar es extremadamente tenue por los estándares terrestres. En las regiones frías y densas del ISM, la materia se encuentra principalmente en forma molecular y alcanza densidades numéricas de 106 moléculas por cm3. En las regiones calientes y difusas del ISM, la materia se ioniza principalmente y la densidad puede ser tan baja como 10-4 iones por cm3.
