Pumice

La piedra pómez / pʌmɨs /, llamada pumicita en polvo o en forma de polvo, es una roca volcánica que consiste en un vidrio volcánico de textura rugosa muy vesicular, que puede contener o no cristales. Es típicamente de color claro. Scoria es otra roca volcánica vesicular que difiere de la piedra pómez al tener vesículas más grandes y paredes de vesículas más gruesas y ser de color oscuro y más denso. La piedra pómez se crea cuando la roca altamente recalentada y altamente presurizada es expulsada violentamente de un volcán. La configuración espumosa inusual de piedra pómez ocurre debido a la rápida refrigeración simultánea y rápida despresurización. La despresurización crea burbujas reduciendo la solubilidad de los gases que se disuelven en la lava, haciendo que los gases se exsolvan rápidamente. El enfriamiento y la despresurización simultáneos congela las burbujas en la matriz. Las erupciones bajo el agua se enfrían rápidamente y el gran volumen de piedra pómez creada puede ser un peligro para el transporte.

Pumice /ˈpʌmɨs/, called pumicite in its powdered or dust form, is a volcanic rock that consists of highly vesicular rough textured volcanic glass, which may or may not contain crystals. It is typically light colored. Scoria is another vesicular volcanic rock that differs from pumice in having larger vesicles and thicker vesicle walls and being dark colored and denser. Pumice is created when super-heated, highly pressurized rock is violently ejected from a volcano. The unusual foamy configuration of pumice happens because of simultaneous rapid cooling and rapid depressurization. The depressurization creates bubbles by lowering the solubility of gases that are dissolved in the lava, causing the gases to rapidly exsolve. The simultaneous cooling and depressurization freezes the bubbles in the matrix. Eruptions under water are rapidly cooled and the large volume of pumice created can be a shipping hazard.
