Piroxeno
Los piroxenos son un grupo importante de minerales inosilicatos formadores de rocas que se encuentran en muchas rocas ígneas y metamórficas. Comparten una estructura común que consta de cadenas simples de tetraedros de sílice y cristalizan en los sistemas monoclinico y ortorrómbico. Los piroxenos tienen la fórmula general XY (Si, Al) 2O6 (donde X representa el calcio, el sodio, el hierro + 2 y el magnesio y más raramente el cinc, el manganeso y el litio e Y representa los iones de menor tamaño, tales como cromo, aluminio, hierro + 3 , Magnesio, manganeso, escandio, titanio, vanadio e incluso hierro + 2). Aunque el aluminio sustituye ampliamente el silicio en silicatos como los feldespatos y los anfíboles, la sustitución se produce sólo de manera limitada en la mayoría de los piroxenos. El nombre piroxeno proviene de las palabras griegas para fuego (πυρ) y extraño (ξένος). Los piroxenos fueron nombrados de esta manera por su presencia en lavas volcánicas, donde a veces se ven como cristales incrustados en vidrio volcánico; Se supone que eran impurezas en el vidrio, de ahí el nombre de "desconocidos fuego". Sin embargo, son simplemente minerales de formación temprana que cristalizaron antes de la erupción de la lava.
