El cientificismo es un término utilizado para referirse a la creencia en la aplicabilidad universal del método científico y el enfoque, y la visión de que la ciencia empírica constituye la cosmovisión más autorizada o la parte más valiosa del aprendizaje humano con exclusión de otros puntos de vista. Se ha definido como "el punto de vista de que los métodos inductivos característicos de las ciencias naturales son la única fuente de conocimientos fácticos genuinos y, en particular, que sólo ellos pueden aportar verdadero conocimiento sobre el hombre y la sociedad" [2]. Implica una crítica de las expresiones más extremas del positivismo lógico [3] [4] y ha sido utilizado por los científicos sociales tales como Friedrich Hayek, [5] filósofos de la ciencia tales como Karl Popper, [6] y filósofos tales como Hilary Putnam [ 7] y Tzvetan Todorov [8] para describir el endoso dogmático de la metodología científica y la reducción de todos los conocimientos sólo a lo que es mensurable. El "scientismo" también ha sido tomado como un nombre para la opinión que la ciencia es la única fuente fiable del conocimiento por los filósofos tales como Alexander Rosenberg. El cientificismo puede referirse a la ciencia aplicada "en exceso".
