Un esporofito es la etapa diploide multicelular en el ciclo de vida de una planta o alga. Se desarrolla a partir del cigoto producido cuando un óvulo haploide es fertilizado por un espermatozoide haploide y cada célula esporofita tiene por lo tanto un doble conjunto de cromosomas, un conjunto de cada uno de los padres. Todas las plantas terrestres, y la mayoría de las algas multicelulares, tienen ciclos de vida en los que una fase de esporofito diploide multicelular se alterna con una fase de gametofito haploide multicelular. En las plantas de semillas, las gimnospermas y las plantas con flores, la fase esporofítica es más prominente que el gametofito, y es la conocida planta verde con sus raíces, tallos, hojas y conos o flores. En las plantas con flores, los gametófitos tienen un tamaño muy reducido, y están representados por el polen y el saco embrionario. El esporofito produce esporas por meiosis, un proceso también conocido como "división de reducción" que reduce el número de cromosomas en cada célula madre de esporas a la mitad. Las meiosporas resultantes se convierten en un gametofito. Tanto las esporas como el gametofito resultante son haploides, lo que significa que sólo tienen un conjunto de cromosomas. El gametofito maduro produce gametos masculinos o femeninos por mitosis.

A sporophyte is the diploid multicellular stage in the life cycle of a plant or alga. It develops from the zygote produced when a haploid egg cell is fertilized by a haploid sperm and each sporophyte cell therefore has a double set of chromosomes, one set from each parent. All land plants, and most multicellular algae, have life cycles in which a multicellular diploid sporophyte phase alternates with a multicellular haploid gametophyte phase. In the seed plants, the Gymnosperms and flowering plants, the sporophyte phase is more prominent than the gametophyte, and is the familiar green plant with its roots, stem, leaves and cones or flowers. In flowering plants the gametophytes are very reduced in size, and are represented by the pollen and the embryo sac. The sporophyte produces spores by meiosis, a process also known as "reduction division" that reduces the number of chromosomes in each spore mother cell by half. The resulting meiospores develop into a gametophyte. Both the spores and the resulting gametophyte are haploid, meaning they only have one set of chromosomes. The mature gametophyte produces male or female gametes by mitosis.
