Emisión termoiónica
La emisión termiónica es el flujo inducido por calor de los portadores de carga desde una superficie o sobre una barrera de energía potencial. Esto ocurre porque la energía térmica dada al soporte supera el potencial de unión, también conocido como función de trabajo, del metal. Los portadores de carga pueden ser electrones o iones, y en la literatura antigua se denominan a veces "termiones". Después de la emisión, se deja inicialmente en la región emisora una carga que es igual en magnitud y con signo opuesto a la carga total emitida. Pero si el emisor está conectado a una batería, la carga que queda es neutralizada por la carga suministrada por la batería a medida que los portadores de carga emitidos se alejan del emisor, y finalmente el emisor estará en el mismo estado que antes de la emisión. El ejemplo clásico de la emisión termiónica es la emisión de electrones de un cátodo caliente a un vacío en un tubo de vacío. El cátodo caliente puede ser un filamento de metal, un filamento de metal recubierto o una estructura separada de metal o carburos o boruros de metales de transición. La emisión de vacío de los metales tiende a ser significativa sólo para temperaturas superiores a 1000 K.
