En relación con las órdenes religiosas, una tercera orden es una asociación de personas que viven de acuerdo con los ideales y el espíritu de un orden religioso católico, anglicano o luterano, pero que no pertenecen a su "primer orden" o su "segundo orden" . Los miembros de terceros órdenes, conocidos como terciarios, son generalmente laicos, es decir, hombres y mujeres que no toman votos religiosos, sino que participan en las buenas obras de orden y se les permite llevar al menos algunos elementos del hábito de la orden, escapulario. Menos a menudo, pertenecen a un instituto religioso que se llama un "secular de tercer orden").
