Univocity del ser es la idea de que las palabras que describen las propiedades de Dios significan lo mismo que cuando se aplican a personas o cosas, incluso si Dios es muy diferente en especie. En las disputas medievales sobre la naturaleza de Dios, muchos teólogos y filósofos sostuvieron que cuando uno dice que "Dios es bueno", la bondad de Dios es sólo análoga a la bondad humana. John Duns Scotus argumentó al contrario que cuando se dice que "Dios es bueno", la bondad en cuestión es exactamente el mismo tipo de bondad que se entiende cuando se dice "Jane es buena". Es decir, Dios sólo difiere de nosotros en grado, y propiedades como la bondad, el poder, la razón, etc., son aplicadas "unívocamente", sin importar si se habla de Dios, de un hombre o de una pulga. Gilles Deleuze tomó prestada la doctrina de la unividad ontológica de Escoto. Afirma que el ser es unívoco, es decir, que todos sus sentidos son afirmados en una sola voz. Deleuze adapta la doctrina de la unividad para afirmar que el ser es, unívocamente, la diferencia. "Con la unividad, sin embargo, no son las diferencias que son y deben ser: es ser que es Diferencia, en el sentido de que se dice de diferencia.

Univocity of being is the idea that words describing the properties of God mean the same thing as when they apply to people or things, even if God is vastly different in kind. In medieval disputes over the nature of God, many theologians and philosophers held that when one says that "God is good", God's goodness is only analogous to human goodness. John Duns Scotus argued to the contrary that when one says that "God is good", the goodness in question is exactly the same sort of goodness that is meant when one says "Jane is good". That is, God only differs from us in degree, and properties such as goodness, power, reason, and so forth are "univocally" applied, regardless of whether one is talking about God, a man, or a flea. Gilles Deleuze borrowed the doctrine of ontological univocity from Scotus. He claimed that being is univocal, i.e., that all of its senses are affirmed in one voice. Deleuze adapts the doctrine of univocity to claim that being is, univocally, difference. "With univocity, however, it is not the differences which are and must be: it is being which is Difference, in the sense that it is said of difference.
