La sociedad actual, llamada sociedad de la información y el conocimiento se caracteriza porque la información domina todas las esferas de la vida humana. La información y el conocimiento constituyen sus recursos básicos y fundamentales. En el eje de este cambio se sitúa la Biblioteca Escolar como un modelo plenamente integrado en el currículum, con una participación activa en el proceso pedagógico y en las tareas de apoyo a la alfabetización informacional. La Biblioteca Escolar que reclama la escuela actual debe ser un modelo soportado con las más avanzadas tecnologías, integrado en el PEI, con funciones concretas de investigación, apoyo, colaboración y alfabetización en información.
