Walaupun terdapat kegunaan televisyen yang lain seperti televisyen litar tertutup, namun kegunaan yang paling utama ialah penyiaran televisyen yang berasaskan sistem penyiaran radio sedia ada yang dibangunkan pada 1920-an, menggunakan pemancar frekuensi radio berkuasa tinggi untuk menyiarkan isyarat televisyen ke penerima TV.
