Hay innumerables textos clasificados como puranos, y de una manera general, los más destacados son: ▪ Los Mahapuranas son dieciocho los principales, como se enumeran a continuación. ▪ Los Upapuranas, algunas decenas, con texto incompleto o no obedeciendo la estructura principal de los grandes puranos. • Los Sthala-purans, textos que consagran las glorias y virtudes de templos, lugares sagrados y espiritualidad locales. ▪ Los Kula-puranas, o textos que relatan el origen y hechos de dinastías, castas o grupos sociales.

Existem inúmeros textos classificados como puranas, e de uma maneira geral, os mais destacados são: ▪ Os Mahapuranas são dezoito os principais, conforme listados abaixo. ▪ Os Upapuranas, algumas dezenas, com texto incompleto ou não obedecendo a estrutura principal dos grande puranas. ▪ Os Sthala-purans, textos que consagram as glórias e virtudes de templos, locais sagrados e espiritualidade locais. ▪ Os Kula-puranas, ou textos que relatam a origem e feitos de dinastias, castas ou grupos sociais.
