Une horloge atomique est un dispositif d'horloge qui utilise une fréquence de transition électronique dans la région micro-onde, optique ou ultraviolette du spectre électromagnétique des atomes comme une norme de fréquence pour son élément de chronométrage. Les horloges atomiques sont les normes de temps et de fréquence les plus précises connues et sont utilisées comme normes primaires pour les services internationaux de distribution de temps, pour contrôler la fréquence des ondes des émissions télévisées et dans les systèmes mondiaux de navigation par satellite tels que le GPS. Le principe du fonctionnement d'une horloge atomique n'est pas basé sur la physique nucléaire, mais plutôt sur la physique atomique et l'utilisation du signal hyperfréquence que les électrons des atomes émettent lorsqu'ils changent les niveaux d'énergie. Les premières horloges atomiques étaient basées sur des masers à température ambiante. À l'heure actuelle, les horloges atomiques les plus précises refroidissent d'abord les atomes jusqu'à une température nulle absolue en les ralentissant avec des lasers et en les sondant dans des fontaines atomiques dans une cavité remplie de micro-ondes. Un exemple de ceci est l'horloge atomique NIST-F1, l'une des normes nationales de temps et de fréquence nationales des États-Unis. La précision d'une horloge atomique dépend de deux facteurs.
