Khufu
Khufu, à l'origine Khnum-Khufu, est le nom de naissance d'un pharaon égyptien ancien de la quatrième dynastie, qui a régné dans la première moitié de la période de l'ancien royaume. Khufu était le deuxième pharaon de la 4ème dynastie; Il a suivi son possible père, roi Sneferu, sur le trône. Il est généralement accepté comme ayant construit la Grande Pyramide de Gizeh, l'une des Sept Merveilles du Monde Ancien, mais beaucoup d'autres aspects de son règne sont assez peu documentés. Khufu est bien connu sous son nom hellénisé Khêpes ou Cheops et moins connu sous un autre nom hellénisé, Súphis. Une version rare du nom de Khufu, utilisé par Josephus, est Sofe. Les historiens arabes, qui ont écrit des histoires mystiques sur Khufu et les pyramides de Gizeh, l'ont appelé Saurid ou Salhuk. Le seul portrait totalement conservé du roi est une figurine d'ivoire de trois pouces trouvée dans une ruine du temple de la période ultérieure à Abydos en 1903. Tous les autres reliefs et statues ont été trouvés en fragments et de nombreux bâtiments de Khufu sont perdus. Tout ce qui est connu de Khufu provient d'inscriptions dans sa nécropole à Gizeh et des documents ultérieurs.
