La chlorité de l'eau est définie comme la masse de chlore équivalente à la masse totale d'halogène contenue dans 1 kg d'eau de mer. Il est déterminé par le titrage Mohr-Knudsen, mais néglige le fluor. La concentration en halogène de l'eau de mer peut être exprimée en termes de chlorosité qui est le nombre de grammes de chlorure et de chlorure équivalents au bromure dans un litre d'eau de mer à 20 ° C. La chlorité est liée à la chlorosité comme: Chloridité = chlorosité / densité de l'échantillon. La choréité est liée à la salinité comme suit: Salinité = 1,80655 x chlorité.
