Saint Cuthbert était saint de l'ancienne église Northumbrian dans la tradition celtique. Il était un moine, un évêque et un ermite, associé aux monastères de Melrose et de Lindisfarne dans ce qu'on pourrait appeler le Royaume de Northumbria dans le nord-est de l'Angleterre. Après sa mort, il est devenu l'un des plus importants saints médiévaux du nord de l'Angleterre, avec un culte centré sur son tombe à la cathédrale de Durham. Cuthbert est considéré comme le saint patron du nord de l'Angleterre. Sa fête est le 20 mars. Il a grandi près de Melrose Abbey, une maison-fille de Lindisfarne, aujourd'hui en Ecosse. Il avait décidé de devenir un moine après avoir vu une vision sur la nuit en 651 que St. Aidan, le fondateur de Lindisfarne, est mort, mais semble avoir vu un certain service militaire d'abord.
