Glomérule
Dans le rein, une structure tubulaire appelée néphron filtre le sang pour former de l'urine. Au début du néphron, le glomérulus / ɡlɒmɛrələs / est un réseau de capillaires qui effectue la première étape du filtrage du sang. Le glomérule est entouré par la capsule de Bowman. Le plasma sanguin est filtré à travers les capillaires du glomérule dans la capsule de Bowman. La capsule de Bowman vide le filtrat dans un tubule qui fait également partie du néphron. Un glomérule reçoit son apport sanguin d'une artériole afférente de la circulation rénale. Contrairement à la plupart des autres lits capillaires, le glomérule s'écoule dans une artériole efférente plutôt qu'une veine. La résistance de ces artérioles entraîne une forte pression dans le glomérule, favorisant le processus d'ultrafiltration, où des fluides et des matières solubles dans le sang sont expulsés des capillaires et dans la capsule de Bowman. Un glomérule et sa capsule Bowman environnantes constituent un corpuscule rénal, l'unité de filtration basique du rein. La vitesse à laquelle le sang est filtré à travers tous les glomérules, et donc la mesure de la fonction rénale globale, est le taux de filtration glomérulaire.
