Halophile
Les halophiles sont des organismes qui vivent dans des concentrations élevées en sel. Ils sont un type d'organisme extrémophile. Le nom vient du mot grec pour "sal-loving". Alors que la plupart des halophiles sont classés dans le domaine d'Archaea, il y a aussi des halophiles bactériens et des eucaryotes tels que l'alga Dunaliella salina ou le champignon Wallemia ichthyophaga. Certaines espèces bien connues dégagent une couleur rouge à partir de composés caroténoïdes, notamment la bactériorhodopsine. Les halophiles peuvent être trouvés partout avec une concentration de sel cinq fois supérieure à la concentration en sel de l'océan, comme le Great Salt Lake dans l'Utah, Owens Lake en Californie, la mer Morte et dans les étangs d'évaporation.
