Joseph-Louis Lagrange
Joseph-Louis Lagrange (né Giuseppe Lodovico Lagrangia (également connu sous le nom de Giuseppe Luigi Lagrangia), 25 janvier 1736 à Turin, dans le Piémont, décédé le 10 avril 1813 à Paris) était un mathématicien et un astronome italien de l'époque des Lumières. Il a contribué de manière significative aux domaines de l'analyse, à la théorie des nombres et à la mécanique classique et céleste. En 1766, sur la recommandation d'Euler et d'Alembert, Lagrange succède à Euler en tant que directrice des mathématiques à l'Académie prussienne des sciences à Berlin, en Prusse, où il a séjourné pendant plus de vingt ans, produisant des volumes de travail et remporté plusieurs prix de la Académie française des sciences. Le traité de Lagrange sur la mécanique analytique (Mécanique Analytique, 4. ed., 2 vols. Paris: Gauthier-Villars et fils, 1888-89), écrit à Berlin et publié pour la première fois en 1788, offrait le traitement le plus complet de la mécanique classique depuis Newton et A constitué une base pour le développement de la physique mathématique au dix-neuvième siècle. En 1787, à l'âge de 51 ans, il est passé de Berlin à Paris et est devenu membre de l'Académie française. Il est resté en France jusqu'à la fin de sa vie.
