Romanisation (culturelle)
La romanisation ou la latinisation - dans les significations historiques et culturelles des deux termes - indiquent différents processus historiques, tels que l'acculturation, l'intégration et l'assimilation des populations nouvellement incorporées et périphériques par la République romaine et le dernier Empire romain. L'ancienne historiographie romaine et l'historiographie italienne jusqu'à ce que la période fasciste appela ces différents procédés la «civilisation des barbares». L'acculturation venait du haut vers le bas, les classes supérieures adoptant d'abord la culture romaine et les anciennes voies les plus longues dans les quartiers périphériques des paysans. Les otages ont joué un rôle important dans ce processus, car les enfants d'élite, de Mauretania en Gaule, ont été élevés et éduqués à Rome. L'ancienne historiographie romaine et l'historiographie italienne traditionnelle ont identifié avec confiance les différents processus impliqués dans une «civilisation des barbares». Les historiens modernes prennent une vision plus nuancée: en faisant leur paix avec Rome, les élites locales pourraient rendre leur position plus sûre et renforcer leur prestige. Les nouveaux thèmes comprennent l'étude des valeurs personnelles et collectives et la construction de l'identité, l'aspect personnel de l'ethnogenèse.
