Un programme de soutien est un programme de radio ou de télévision qui, malgré l'émission d'air dans une station de diffusion commerciale, n'a pas de parrainage commercial ou de publicité. Ce terme, principalement utilisé aux États-Unis, était courant dans les premiers jours de la radio, mais est devenu inconnu, en raison de l'utilisation presque universelle de la publicité commerciale à la radio et à la télévision. Les stations de radio commerciales ont commencé à diffuser au début des années 1920, mais il faudrait plus d'une décennie avant que la notion de vente de publicité aérienne ne soit prise en compte. De nombreuses stations de radio ont été créées par des fabricants d'équipements radio et des détaillants tels que RCA et des émissions ont été programmées pour vendre les émetteurs et récepteurs radio encore brevetés. La programmation a été financée par la vente de l'équipement. D'autres stations et programmes de radio ont été fournis en tant que service public par des dotations ou des financements municipaux.
