U Thant était un diplomate birman et le troisième secrétaire général des Nations Unies de 1961 à 1971. Originaire de Pantanaw, Thant a été formé à l'école secondaire nationale et à l'Université Rangoon. Au temps du climat politique tendu en Birmanie, il tenait des vues modérées qui se positionnaient entre des nationalistes fervents et des loyalistes britanniques. Il était un ami proche du premier ministre U Nu de la Birmanie et a occupé divers postes dans le cabinet de Nu de 1948 à 1961. Thant avait un comportement calme et modeste qui a gagné le respect de ses collègues. Il a été nommé secrétaire général en 1961 lorsque son prédécesseur, Dag Hammarskjöld, est mort dans un accident de l'air. Dans son premier mandat, Thant a facilité les négociations entre le président américain John F. Kennedy et le ministre soviétique Nikita Khrushchev lors de la crise des missiles cubains, ce qui a permis de réduire de près la possibilité d'une catastrophe mondiale. En décembre 1962, Thant a ordonné l'Opération Grand Chelem qui a mis fin à l'insurrection sécessionniste au Congo. Il a été reconduit en tant que Secrétaire général le 2 décembre 1966 par un vote unanime du Conseil de sécurité. U Thant was a Burmese diplomat and the third Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1961 to 1971. A native of Pantanaw, Thant was educated at the National High School and at the Rangoon University. In the days of tense political climate in Burma, he held moderate views positioning himself between fervent nationalists and British loyalists. He was a close friend of Burma's first Prime Minister U Nu and served various positions in Nu's cabinet from 1948 to 1961. Thant had a calm and unassuming demeanor which won his colleagues' respect. He was appointed as Secretary-General in 1961 when his predecessor, Dag Hammarskjöld died in an air crash. In his first term, Thant facilitated negotiations between U.S. President John F. Kennedy and Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev during the Cuban missile crisis, thereby narrowly averting the possibility of a global catastrophe. In December 1962, Thant ordered the Operation Grand Slam which ended secessionist insurgency in Congo. He was reappointed as Secretary-General on 2nd December 1966 by a unanimous vote of the Security Council. In his second term, Thant was well-known for publicly criticizing American conduct in the Vietnam War.
