V-chip est un terme générique pour la technologie utilisée dans les récepteurs de télévision au Canada, au Brésil et aux États-Unis, ce qui permet de bloquer les programmes en fonction de leur catégorie d'évaluation. Il est destiné à être utilisé par les parents pour gérer l'affichage de la télévision de leurs enfants. Les télévisions fabriquées pour le marché des États-Unis depuis 1999 et toutes les unités à partir de janvier 2000 sont requises pour disposer de la technologie V-chip. L'idée de bloquer des programmes de cette façon a été brevetée par Brett West et John P. Gardner en 1994 et testée au Canada. Depuis lors, de nombreux appareils utilisant la technologie V-chip ont été produits. La technologie V-chip fonctionne comme le sous-titrage et utilise l'intervalle de suppression verticale dans le signal de télévision. Le système reçoit un code spécial dans le signal de diffusion qui indique le score de l'émission selon un système de notation numérique simple pour la violence, le sexe et la langue. Les signaux des programmes sont codés en fonction de leur notation, à la ligne 21 de l'intervalle de suppression verticale du signal de diffusion à l'aide du protocole XDS, ce qui est détecté par la puce V du téléviseur.

V-chip is a generic term for technology used in television set receivers in Canada, Brazil and the USA, which allows the blocking of programs based on their ratings category. It is intended for use by parents to manage their children's television viewing. Televisions manufactured for the United States market since 1999 and all units as of January 2000 are required to have the V-chip technology. The idea for blocking programs in this way was patented by Brett West and John P. Gardner in 1994 and tested in Canada. Since then many devices using V-chip technology have been produced. V-chip technology works much like closed captioning and uses the vertical blanking interval in the television signal. The system receives a special code in the broadcast signal which indicates the show's score according to a simple numerical rating system for violence, sex, and language. The programs' signals are encoded according to their rating, on line 21 of the broadcast signal's vertical blanking interval using the XDS protocol, and this is detected by the television set's V-chip.
