Érinyes, aussi appelés eumenides dans la mythologie grecque, les furies (fureur ou Dirae) par les Romains, étaient les génies vengeurs qui ont puni les meurtres des mortels. Ils surveillaient surtout les assassins (v. Andestes, Alcmaeon), les torturant ou les prenant dans leurs esprits. Les sabots étaient nés des gouttelettes de sang qui erraient sur la mutilation d'Uranus. Ils étaient généralement comptés en trois nombres: Alecto, Megaera et Tisiphone, représentés comme des génies ailés, avec des serpents dans les cheveux. Plus tard, les héroïnes ont également reçu les punitions auxquelles les hommes ont été soumis dans l'Inferno. Erinyes, numite și eumenide (eumenides) în mitologia greacă, furii (furiae sau dirae) de către romani, erau genii răzbunătoare care pedepseau fărădelegile muritorilor. Ele îi urmăreau mai ales pe ucigași (v. și Orestes, Alcmaeon), chinuindu-i sau luîndu-le mințile. Eriniile s-au născut din picăturile de sînge care au curs pe pămînt în urma mutilării lui Uranus. Erau socotite, în general, trei la număr: Alecto, Megaera și Tisiphone, reprezentate ca niște genii înaripate, cu șerpi în plete. Mai tîrziu, eriniilor li s-au atribuit și pedepsele la care erau supuși oamenii în Infern.
