Matrice attiva
La matrice attiva è un tipo di schema di indirizzi utilizzato nei display a schermo piatto. In questo metodo di commutazione di singoli elementi di uno schermo a schermo piatto, ogni pixel è collegato a un transistor e un condensatore che mantengono attivamente lo stato dei pixel mentre altri pixel vengono indirizzati. Questo deve essere contrastato con la tecnologia della matrice passiva più avanzata in cui ogni pixel deve mantenere lo stato passivo, senza essere guidato da circuiti. La tecnologia a matrice attiva è stata inventata da Bernard J. Lechner a RCA e dimostrata per la prima volta come un dispositivo fattibile utilizzando transistori a film sottile di T. Peter Brody e del suo reparto Thin-Film Devices presso Westinghouse Electric Corporation nel 1974 e il termine è stato introdotto in La letteratura nel 1975. Dato una matrice m × n, il numero di connettori necessari per affrontare il display è m + n. Ogni pixel è collegato ad un dispositivo di interruttore che mantiene attivamente lo stato dei pixel mentre altri pixel vengono indirizzati, impedendo altresì la trasgressione a modificare inavvertitamente lo stato di un pixel non indirizzato. I dispositivi di commutazione più comuni utilizzano Transistori Thin Film, vale a dire.
