CHE SIGNIFICA CAPELIN IN INGLESE

Il capelina o il cappello, il villaggio di Mallotus, è un piccolo pesce di foraggio della famiglia degli aromi trovati negli oceani atlantici e artici. In estate, pascola su fitti sciocchi di plancton ai bordi del ripiano di ghiaccio. Il capelin più grande inoltre mangia molta graniglia e altri crostacei. Le balene, le foche, il baccalà, il calamaro, lo sgombro, le balene beluga e le uccelli marini sono tutte prede di capelina, in particolare durante la stagione di riproduzione del capelino, mentre migra verso sud. Capelin spawn su spiagge sabbiose e fondo sabbioso all'età di 2-6 anni e ha un tasso di mortalità estremamente elevato sulle spiagge dopo la riproduzione, per i maschi vicino alla mortalità del 100%. I maschi raggiungono 20 cm di lunghezza, mentre le femmine sono lunghe fino a 25 cm. Sono color ulivi dorsali, ombreggiati da argento sui lati. I maschi hanno una cresta traslucida su entrambi i lati del corpo. Gli aspetti ventrali dei maschi iridesce rossastro al momento della spawn.
