Catalisi
La catalisi è l'aumento della velocità di reazione chimica di uno o più reattivi a causa della partecipazione di una sostanza aggiuntiva chiamata catalizzatore. A differenza di altri reagenti nella reazione chimica, un catalizzatore non viene consumato dalla reazione. Con un catalizzatore, è necessaria una riduzione dell'energia libera per raggiungere lo stato di transizione, ma l'energia totale libera dai reagenti ai prodotti non cambia. Un catalizzatore può partecipare a più trasformazioni chimiche. L'effetto di un catalizzatore può variare a causa della presenza di altre sostanze note come inibitori o veleni o promotori. L'opposto di un catalizzatore, una sostanza che riduce il tasso di una reazione, è un inibitore. Le reazioni catalizzate hanno un'energia di attivazione inferiore rispetto alla corrispondente reazione non catalizzata, con conseguente velocità di reazione più elevata alla stessa temperatura.
