Il cotillion è un tipo di ballo sociale modellato che è nato in Francia nel XVIII secolo. Fu originariamente costituito da quattro coppie in una formazione quadrata, il precursore della quadriglia; Negli Stati Uniti il ballo quadrato, dove i "cifre" sono chiamati ad alta voce dal chiamante, è una forma di contraddizione rurale che è anche discendente dalla cotillion urbana. Il suo nome, dal cotillon francese, "sottovaso", rifletteva il lampo delle sottovesti come i mutevoli partner si trasformarono.
