Edom
Edom o Idumea era una regione storica abitata da semiti, situata nel sud della Levanda meridionale della Giudea e del Mar Morto. È menzionato nei registri biblici come un regno di Edom del primo millennio aC, e nell'antichità classica il nome cognato Idumea è stato usato per riferirsi ad una più piccola area della stessa regione. Il nome Edom significa "rosso" in ebraico ed è stato dato ad Esaù, il figlio maggiore del patriarca ebraico Isacco, una volta mangiato la "vasi rossa", che la Bibbia usava in ironia per il fatto che è nato "rosso in tutto ". La Torah, Tanakh e Nuovo Testamento descrivono così i Edomiti come discendenti di Esaù.
