Nell'Impero Bizantino, un esarca era un governatore con estesa autorità su una provincia ad una certa distanza dalla capitale Costantinopoli. Nelle chiese cristiane orientali, il termine esarca ha due usi distinti: il deputato di un patriarca o un vescovo che detiene autorità su altri vescovi senza essere un patriarca; O un vescovo nominato su un gruppo di fedeli non ancora abbastanza grande o organizzato abbastanza da costituire un'eparchia / diocesi.
