Externalismo è un gruppo di posizioni nella filosofia della mente che affermano che la mente non è solo il risultato di ciò che accade all'interno del sistema nervoso, ma anche di ciò che avviene o esiste al di fuori del soggetto. È spesso contrastata con l'interiorismo che afferma che la mente esce dall'attività neurale da sola. L'externalismo articola la convinzione che la mente non sia solo il cervello o quello che il cervello fa. Esistono diverse versioni di externalismo basate sia sulla forza della relazione, sia su ciò che la mente è presa. [1] L'externalismo sottolinea l'importanza di fattori esterni al sistema nervoso. A un estremo, la mente potrebbe dipendere da fattori esterni. Al contrario, la mente dipende necessariamente da fattori esterni. La forma più estrema dell'esteriorismo sostiene che la mente sia costituita o identica con processi fisici parzialmente o totalmente esterni al sistema nervoso. Un altro criterio importante è quale aspetto della mente è affrontato.
