Gesto
Un gesto è una forma di comunicazione non verbale o di comunicazione non vocale in cui le azioni corporee visibili comunicano messaggi particolari, o al posto di o in collegamento con, il discorso. I gesti includono il movimento delle mani, del volto o di altre parti del corpo. I gesti differiscono dalla comunicazione fisica non verbale che non comunica messaggi specifici, quali esposizioni puramente espressive, proxymi o display di attenzione congiunta. I gesti permettono agli individui di comunicare una varietà di sentimenti e pensieri, dal disprezzo e dall'ostilità all'approvazione e all'affetto, spesso insieme al linguaggio del corpo oltre alle parole quando parlano. L'elaborazione di gesti si svolge in aree del cervello come le aree di Broca e Wernicke, usate dalla lingua del linguaggio e del linguaggio. Infatti, si pensa che il linguaggio si sia evoluto dai gesti manuali. La teoria che il linguaggio evoluto dai gesti manuali, chiamato Teoria Gestionale, risale all'opera del filosofo e del sacerdote XVIII secolo, Abbé de Condillac, ed è stata ripresa dall'antropologo contemporaneo Gordon W. Hewes nel 1973, nell'ambito di una discussione su L'origine del linguaggio.
