Leipzig (/ laɪptsɪɡ /; Pronuncia di tedesco: (ascolta)) è una città nello stato federale di Sassonia, Germania. Ha circa 530.000 abitanti ed è il cuore della regione metropolitana tedesca centrale. Lipsia si trova a circa 150 chilometri a sud di Berlino alla confluenza dei fiumi Elster, Pleisse e Parthe, alla fine sud della pianura nord-settentrionale. Lipsia è stata una città commerciale, poiché almeno il tempo del Sacro Romano Impero, seduto all'incrocio tra Via Regia e Via Imperii, due importanti itinerari commerciali medievali. Una volta, Lipsia è stato uno dei principali centri europei di apprendimento e cultura in settori come la musica e la pubblicazione. Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, Lipsia divenne un importante centro urbano all'interno della Repubblica democratica tedesca (Germania orientale), ma la sua importanza culturale ed economica è diminuita, nonostante la Germania orientale sia l'economia più ricca del blocco sovietico. Lipsia in seguito ha svolto un ruolo significativo nell'insorgere della caduta del comunismo nell'Europa orientale, attraverso eventi avvenuti in e intorno alla chiesa di San Nicola.
