Un maypole è un polo alto in legno eretto come parte di vari festival europei folcloristici, intorno a cui una danza maypole spesso si svolge. I festeggiamenti possono avvenire il giorno di maggio o la Pentecoste, anche se in alcuni paesi viene invece eretto a Midsummer. In alcuni casi il maypole è una caratteristica permanente che viene utilizzata solo durante il festival, anche se in altri casi viene eretta specificamente per lo scopo prima di essere ripreso. Soprattutto nelle nazioni dell'Europa germanica e nelle aree limitrofe che hanno influenzato, le sue origini rimangono sconosciute, anche se è stato ipotizzato che in origine aveva una certa importanza nel paganesimo germanico dell'età del ferro e nelle prime culture medievali e che la tradizione sopravvisse Cristianizzazione, pur perdendo qualsiasi significato originario. È stata una pratica registrata in molte parti dell'Europa durante i periodi medievali e primi di quelli moderni, anche se è diventata meno popolare nel XVIII e XIX secolo.
