Nell'architettura, un basamento è la base o la piattaforma su cui poggia una colonna, un piedistallo, una statua, un monumento o una struttura. I Quattro Elementi di Architettura di Gottfried Semper hanno affermato che il plinto, il focolare, il tetto e il muro costituiscono tutta la teoria architettonica. Il basamento di solito poggia direttamente sul terreno, o "stylobate". Secondo Semper, lo zoccolo esiste per negoziare tra una struttura e il suolo. La teoria di Semper è stata influente nello sviluppo dell'architettura. Molte case in aree rurali incontaminate del Bangladesh sono costruite su zoccoli. La parola è usata anche per la base di un armadio o di un giradischi audio. Nella costruzione della diga, il "zoccolo" è il legame tra il terreno e la diga.
