Un grattacielo è un edificio alto e continuo abitabile di molti piani, di solito progettato per uso ufficio, commerciale e residenziale. Non esiste una definizione ufficiale o un'altezza al di sopra del quale un edificio può essere classificato come un grattacielo e a quale altezza non può più essere considerato un grattacielo. Per gli edifici al di sopra di un'altezza di 300 m, si può usare il termine Supertall, i grattacieli che superano i 600 m sono classificati come Megatall. Una caratteristica comune dei grattacieli è quella di avere un telaio in acciaio che supporta le pareti delle tende. Queste pareti laterali appartengono alla struttura sottostante o possono essere sospese dal quadro sopra, piuttosto che da pareti portanti di costruzione convenzionale. Alcuni grattacieli in anticipo hanno un telaio in acciaio che consente la costruzione di pareti portanti più alte di quelle in cemento armato. Le pareti moderne dei grattacieli non sono portanti e la maggior parte dei grattacieli sono caratterizzati da ampie superfici di finestre rese possibili dal concetto di struttura d'acciaio e pareti divisorie. A skyscraper is a tall, continuously habitable building of many floors, usually designed for office, commercial and residential use. There is no official definition or height above which a building may be classified as a skyscraper and at which height it may not be considered a high-rise anymore. For buildings above a height of 300 m, the term Supertall can be used, skyscrapers reaching beyond 600 m are classified as Megatall. One common feature of skyscrapers is having a steel framework that supports curtain walls. These curtain walls either bear on the framework below or are possibly suspended from the framework above, rather than load-bearing walls of conventional construction. Some early skyscrapers have a steel frame that enables the construction of load-bearing walls taller than of those made of reinforced concrete. Modern skyscrapers' walls are not load-bearing and most skyscrapers are characterized by large surface areas of windows made possible by the concept of steel frame and curtain walls. However, skyscrapers can have curtain walls that mimic conventional walls and a small surface area of windows.
