La solubilità è proprietà di una sostanza chimica solida, liquida o gassosa chiamata soluto per dissolversi in un solvente solido, liquido o gassoso per formare una soluzione omogenea del soluto nel solvente. La solubilità di una sostanza dipende fondamentalmente dalle proprietà fisiche e chimiche del soluto e del solvente così come sulla temperatura, la pressione e il pH della soluzione. L'estensione della solubilità di una sostanza in un solvente specifico viene misurata come concentrazione di saturazione, in cui l'aggiunta di più soluto non aumenta la concentrazione della soluzione e comincia a precipitare l'eccesso di soluto. Più spesso, il solvente è un liquido, che può essere una sostanza pura o una miscela. Si può anche parlare di solida soluzione, ma raramente di soluzione in un gas. L'ampiezza della solubilità varia ampiamente, da infinitamente solubile, come l'etanolo in acqua, a scarso solubilità, come il cloruro d'argento in acqua. Il termine insolubile è spesso applicato a composti poco o molto poco solubili. In determinate condizioni, la solubilità di equilibrio può essere superata per dare una soluzione cosiddetta supersaturata, metastabile.
