Un orologio di stop è un orologio portatile progettato per misurare la quantità di tempo trascorso da un determinato momento in cui è attivata al momento in cui il pezzo è disattivato. Una grande versione digitale di un cronometro progettato per la visualizzazione a distanza, come in uno stadio sportivo, viene chiamato stopclock. Un tipico cronometro meccanico analogico. Le funzioni di temporizzazione sono tradizionalmente controllate da due pulsanti sul case. Premendo il pulsante superiore si avvia il timer in funzione e premendo il pulsante una seconda volta lo arresta, lasciando il tempo trascorso visualizzato. Una pressione del secondo pulsante riporta quindi il cronometro a zero. Il secondo pulsante viene utilizzato anche per registrare tempi di frattura o tempi di giro. Quando viene premuto il pulsante di tempo di divisione mentre l'orologio è in funzione, il display si blocca, consentendo la lettura del tempo trascorso a quel punto, ma il meccanismo di visualizzazione continua a eseguire per registrare il tempo totale trascorso. Premendo il pulsante di divisione una seconda volta, l'orologio riprenderà la visualizzazione del tempo totale. I cronometri meccanici sono alimentati da una molla che deve essere periodicamente avvolta ruotando la manopola zigrinata nella parte superiore dell'orologio.
