Nella geologia, la subduzione è il processo che avviene a confini convergenti mediante i quali una piastra tettonica si muove sotto un'altra piastra tettonica e si affonda nel mantello quando le piastre convergono. Le regioni in cui questo processo si verifica sono conosciute come zone di subduzione. I tassi di subduzione sono tipicamente centimetri all'anno, con un tasso medio di convergenza di circa due o otto centimetri all'anno. Le piastre comprendono sia la crosta oceanica che la crosta continentale. Le zone di subduzione stabilite coinvolgono la litosfera oceanica di una lastra che scivola sotto la litosfera continentale o la litosfera oceanica di un altro piatto a causa della maggiore densità della litosfera oceanica. Cioè, la litosfera sottomessa è sempre oceanica, mentre la litosfera sovrastante può o non essere oceanica. Le zone di subduzione sono luoghi di alto tasso di vulcanismo, terremoti e costruzione di montagna. L'orogenesia o la costruzione di montagna si verificano quando grandi pezzi di materiale sulla piastra subducratrice vengono premuti nella piastra di sovraccarico o quando si verifica una contrazione subhorizontal nella piastra di sovrapposizione.
