人の生活とは、「食糧、水、避難所、生活の衣服」の基本的な必需品を確保する手段を指します。 生計は、水、食糧、飼料、医薬品、避難所、衣類、および必要以上に身に付ける能力を確保することを含む一連の活動として定義され、自己とその必要条件を満たすための基金を使って、 尊厳を持って持続可能な基盤を維持する。 活動は通常繰り返し行われます。 例えば、漁師の生計は、魚の入手可能性とアクセス可能性に依存する。 「持続可能な生活」の概念は、従来の定義や貧困撲滅のアプローチを超えた試みです。 低所得などの特定の側面や兆候にのみ焦点を当てるか、脆弱性や社会的排除などの貧困の他の重要な側面を考慮しなかったため、これらは狭すぎると判明しました。 経済的、生態学的、社会的に持続可能な方法で貧困層の人々の生活能力を制限または強化するさまざまな要素やプロセスに、より多くの注意を払わなければならないことが認識されています。

A person's livelihood refers to their "means of securing the basic necessities -food, water, shelter and clothing- of life". Livelihood is defined as a set of activities, involving securing water, food, fodder, medicine, shelter, clothing and the capacity to acquire above necessities working either individually or as a group by using endowments for meeting the requirements of the self and his/her household on a sustainable basis with dignity. The activities are usually carried out repeatedly. For instance, a fisherman's livelihood depends on the availability and accessibility of fish. The concept of Sustainable Livelihood is an attempt to go beyond the conventional definitions and approaches to poverty eradication. These had been found to be too narrow because they focused only on certain aspects or manifestations of poverty, such as low income, or did not consider other vital aspects of poverty such as vulnerability and social exclusion. It is now recognized that more attention must be paid to the various factors and processes which either constrain or enhance poor people’s ability to make a living in an economically, ecologically, and socially sustainable manner.
